You pick dandelions and buttercups
on the
playground.
Giving them
to Sydney and Alice
mom and dad
and Mrs. Duke.

You wait by the phone
your first boyfriend should be calling.
He should be bringing you
sunflowers.

Walking down the aisle;
something blue,
maybe tulips.
At the altar,
you hand off you bouquet
to your bridesmaid.

Your children
give you roses
on Mother’s Day.
You put them into a vase
in your kitchen.

Your family cries
while they place begonias
on top of
your casket.

Flowers
for you
to make you smile.
