Jefferson High School will see a community that cares, as “Dude. Be Nice. Week” gets underway.

“Dude. Be Nice Week,” sponsored by Renaissance Club, Key Club and Student Government Association, is a week-long project made simply to promote kindness and positivity. It began Monday, March 19 and ends Friday, March 23.

As of Tuesday morning, March 20, winter had made a last stand in Jefferson County, with all schools cancelled. So, “Dude. Be Nice. Week” celebrations are likely to change. But here’s what sponsors had scheduled:

  • Monday highlighted students, with positive Post-It Notes on every door and locker in the school, with free popcorn after school at the school store.
  • Tuesday’s plan was to highlight student organizations. On this day, student clubs and organizations would be permitted to use the main lobby during Cougar Hour to talk about and recruit new members for their cause.
  • Wednesday will highlight JHS staff. Teachers will receive free donuts and coffee on that morning.
  • Thursday will highlight the school community. Students from Jefferson’s Key and Renaissance clubs will read to younger students at North Jefferson Elementary School.
  • Friday will be a celebration in honor of “Dude. Be Nice. Week” in the form of a pep rally. During the pep rally, organizers will be recognize winter and spring sports athletes, clubs and organizations, students with honor roll, and much more.

Adam Hawthorne, Renaissance Club vice president, said the goal of the week-long festivities is to remind the JHS community that a little kindness can go a long way.

“You can do this by just sitting with someone who usually sits alone and talk to them,” he said. “Even just opening a door for someone. No matter who you are, everyone deserves kindness, so dude: Be nice.”
