I saw my compatriota walk by
she was wearing our beautiful flag
proud of who she was
because a Latina is proud.

We don’t have it easy, you know;
They think we are killers
gente with a lot of problems
rapists
drug dealers
bringing crime to their country.

They think they are better
for their skin tone
and where they were born.

But I would rather be an indocumentada who has respect
than an American who isn’t humilde.

I saw her, a smile on my face;
she doesn’t care what people say.
Being a Latina is an honor —
siblings around the world
painted different colors
living in worlds that aren’t so different,
dying to try to get a better life.

You don’t see that.

“Let’s Make America Great Again.”
How are you going to do it without us
when we are the reason you guys are known.
